Another MTG arguement question?

In a duel I had a second ago there was an arguement over a little combat. My friend attacked with his fully leveled up white creature that was a 4/4 and had double strike. I blocked it with my black knight and since it had protection from white it did not die the first combat phase. So in the non-first strike phase was my black knight still blocking his creature since it survived the first strike phase?
